Around Camp March 26, 2008
We have been repairing our propane grill for the last five years. Canadian Tire has sale on grills. We had two of these grills last year and our customers just loved them. So I went to town and bought five more. When junior starts to work in April assembling them will be one of his first jobs. His next job will be to work on our outboard motors. He will install new spark plugs and fill the lower units with oil. I always drain the lower units in the fall and if the oil looks “milky” that means that there is a seal leak. I only had one motor that had to have new seals last year. Junior will also pull the props off to check for any fishing line that could be wound around the prop. The only other this that he will do is clean and wax the motor cover.
I am still working on my R.C. boat model. I need to finish it soon as it will be time to start to open cabins for the clearing crew to do their jobs.
Judy is in Tennessee to visit the grand kids. My son-in law Mark was transferred there about three years ago. Our daughter Katie likes Tenn. because they have no snow to speak of. Where did we go wrong?

I fish for walleyes with floating jig heads. One of the things that I do is to sharpen the hooks on the jigs. I have a battery powered hook hone. I find time this time of year to check all my jigs and sharpen the hooks. I will also use a floating spinner rig. Again now is the time to check the hooks and sharpen if required.
Now is the time that I turn to the fishing poles. I check all the eyelets for any nicks and replace if necessary. When I check the eyelets I look at the bindings and if they look a bit frayed I apply a bit of clear nail polish to stop the fraying. When I assemble a two piece rod I rub the male end along side of my nose. I learned from an old friend that area of your nose has a bit of oil that will prevent binding when you take apart your rod. The rod that I plan to use for the spinner, I tie a “Sampo” ball bearing snap swivel. I have learned that you must use a ball bearing swivel because spinners will twist your line if you use a cheap swivel. One other thing that I check is my landing net. I look for is any area that needs to be repaired. If the net is too bad I go to my local tackle shop and buy replacement netting. Many of our customers bring their own trolling motors. Now is the time to check your deep cycle battery. Make sure that if the battery needs water you use distilled water. You should charge with an automatic charger and at 2 amp charge.

Fishing Line
March 22, 2008
While watching the hockey game I decided to clean and restring our fishing reels. I use open faced spinning and Judy uses a closed face reel. For the open faced reels I remove the spool and clean the shaft and apply 3 in 1 oil to the shaft. I then remove the handle and side plate. That exposes the internal gears. I apply white grease and put the side plate and the handle back. For the closed face reel, I remove the front cover and clean the gears and replace the cover.
As for re stringing, we have been using “Ande” 6# test (green). Last year I tried the Berkley “Vanish” a fluorocarbon (clear). “They” tell me that fish cannot see the “Vanish” line well, how do “They” know that?
When I restring the reels I remove a good portion of the old line and tie on the new line. I identify the knot with a dab of red nail polish. This tells me during the season that I may be close to the knot. I am very careful to have the new line wind on the reel the same way as the old line. I use a simple line winder gadget that allows me to control how the line goes oh the reel. This will prevent the line twist that will occur if the line is put on backwards.

Water Level
March 15, 2008
The lake is still frozen, and the published lake water level is 195.13 cm. (+15.7in) and the French level is 181.90 cm. (+21.3in). The water level when the ice melts is important to the spring level. There are 23 dams that allow the spring run off to enter the lake. There are only two dams to let water out of the lake. Depending how much snow melt there is in those areas will determine how much the lake will rise. When Lake Nipissing is lowered by .39 inches in 24 hours, the French River will rise by 18 ¾ inches. The point is that it is not an easy task to lower the lake level. The mandate for controlling these dams varies from Ontario power Generation to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Our Walleye and Pike season opens on May 17 this year. The water temperature determines how well the fishing will be when we open. The lake water temperature is dependant on the ice melt and the influence of the water coming into the lake from those 23 dams.
My experience tells me that the walleye fishing may be poor when we open due to the cold water. Pike on the other hand should be good, but one must use live bait under a bobber.
Speaking of Northern Pike, the size limits are as follows, not more then two greater then 61cm (24 in), of which not more then 1 is greater than 86cm.(33.9 in). This is a NEW regulation and different from last year. This seems confusing to me but, that’s what the Ministry of Natural Resources has published.

Week of March 11,2008
This will be my first attempt to enter a blog. The weather here is bright and sunny. The temperature is 0 c and we expect about 2 to 5 cm. of snow today. I have been working on a model of a fishing trawler. The model will be radio controlled and powered by a 4.8 vdc motor.
