Fishing Line

March 22, 2008

While watching the hockey game I decided to clean and restring our fishing reels. I use open faced spinning and Judy uses a closed face reel. For the open faced reels I remove the spool and clean the shaft and apply 3 in 1 oil to the shaft. I then remove the handle and side plate. That exposes the internal gears. I apply white grease and put the side plate and the handle back. For the closed face reel, I remove the front cover and clean the gears and replace the cover.
As for re stringing, we have been using “Ande” 6# test (green). Last year I tried the Berkley “Vanish” a fluorocarbon (clear). “They” tell me that fish cannot see the “Vanish” line well, how do “They” know that?
When I restring the reels I remove a good portion of the old line and tie on the new line. I identify the knot with a dab of red nail polish. This tells me during the season that I may be close to the knot. I am very careful to have the new line wind on the reel the same way as the old line. I use a simple line winder gadget that allows me to control how the line goes oh the reel. This will prevent the line twist that will occur if the line is put on backwards.
